Sclerotherapy (sclair-o-therapy) is a treatment used in spider vein therapy, and varicose vein therapy. A solution, called a sclerosing solution, is injected with a very fine needle directly into the blood vessel. The solution irritates the lining of the vessel causing it to swell and close off. Over a period of several weeks the vessels slowly fade; becoming barely visible or fading completely.

Patients who have sclerotherapy have reported little discomfort. Knee high support hose are commonly worn after each treatment for a few days but are optional.

Treatments are performed in our skin care suites and usually last 45 minutes to one hour depending on the extent of spider veins the patient has. Several treatments are advised usually one per month depending on the patient’s condition. This procedure would also be performed in our skin care suites, unless the condition requires more extensive treatment.

SPIDER VEINS

Spider veins or telangiectasis of the legs are common problems that particularly affect women. Small purple, blue, or red veins can form anywhere on the leg, from the top of the thigh to the ankle, and sometimes occur on the face as well. The cause of spider veins is thought to be primarily genetic, but estrogen may play a role in their development, as they are noticed more frequently after puberty, pregnancy, or using oral contraceptives. When occurring on the face, spider veins may be related to chronic sun exposure.

VARICOSE VEINS

Varicose (vair-uh-coase) veins are larger, raised veins which are often blue in color. These are superficial veins connected with the vascular system which can become incompetent and become quite painful producing a burning, throbbing sensation. Varicose veins may be treated with sclerotherapy as well. These veins can often be eliminated within several weeks or months of treatments
