What Is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is defined by increased breast tissue size in males. This is not a medical condition but the appearance of male breasts may evoke feelings of self-consciousness, embarrassment or anxiety. Gynecomastia can affect males of any age and can be present in one or both breasts and in even or uneven tissue distribution.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

Hormonal imbalances are the root cause of gynecomastia, specifically testosterone and estrogen. Additionally, drugs and alcohol, health conditions, medications and herbal products can cause enlarged male breasts.

The following drugs are associated with gynecomastia:

  • Amphetamines
  • Heroin
  • Methadone
  • Alcohol

The following health conditions can cause gynecomastia through hormonal imbalance:

  • Aging
  • Obesity
  • Tumors
  • Hypogonadism
  • Kidney failure
  • Liver failure
  • Cirrhosis
  • Malnutrition

The following medications can cause gynecomastia:

  • Anabolic steroids and androgens
  • AIDS medication
  • Anti-anxiety medication
  • Tricyclic antidepressants
  • Anti-androgens used for prostate cancer or prostate enlargement
  • Antibiotics
  • Ulcer medications
  • Cancer treatment
  • Heart medications
  • Gastric motility medications

Finally, herbal products which include tea tree or lavender may spur the growth of male breast buds due to weak estrogenic activity.

Additionally, adolescent- and older-aged patients may be more likely to experience this health condition due to hormone activity associated with the respective age or stage of life.

Am I A Candidate For Gynecomastia Surgery?

Patients in good physical and mental health that are experiencing larger than average breast tissue are candidates for this surgery.

What Are The Risks Of Gynecomastia Surgery?

In order to make an informed decision to undergo cosmetic surgery, patients should be aware of the potential risks. Bleeding; blood clots; asymmetrical breasts; fat necrosis; fluid accumulation; pain; infection and unfavorable scarring are all unlikely, yet possible side effects.

How To Prepare For Gynecomastia Surgery?

Dr. Poser requires all patients to undergo a consultation prior to surgery. Patient concerns and a medical exam are included during the consultation. Dr. Poser will identify the likely cause of breast growth to determine the ideal treatment. Patients may be required to have certain labs drawn or testing done before surgery. For optimal healing, patients should quit smoking and refrain from taking anti-inflammatory drugs in preparation for surgery.

Gynecomastia Surgery Procedures

Before surgery may begin, anesthesia is administered. If excess fatty tissue is the culprit, Dr. Poser may utilize liposuction to reduce breast size. Liposuction is carried out by creating small incisions around the breast and inserting a thin hollow tube which removes fat from the area via vacuum suction. For patients requiring tissue removal, nipple reposition and/or areola reduction, incisions will be made to best sculpt a typical, natural male contour. Additionally, breast buds and glandular tissue may be removed as well. Note that gynecomastia surgery can include both liposuction and tissue excision.

Results & Recovery

After surgery the patient will have bandages applied to incisions and a support garment will be applied to minimize swelling while supporting the chest. Sutures or dissolvable stitches are typically used to close the incisions. Some patients may leave the plastic surgery center with drain tube(s) in place. The majority of patients are able to resume regular activities within a week or two. Noticeable differences in chest size will be visible after surgery, but it may take up to six months for final results to be realized. Patients will notice permanent scars but can expect them slightly fade over time.

This male cosmetic surgery procedure takes a couple of hours and patients experience some pain and sensitivity in the area for a few days following surgery, which can be alleviated through a prescription for pain medication. Overall, it’s small price to pay to regain confidence!
